Emerald Season Safari

Our Emerald Season Safari during February and March will astound you in the wondrous and magical wilderness of the South Luangwa National Park. Bursting with life and vibrantly painted with every shade of green imaginable, the Luangwa River is filled to the brim after the long dry season. Prepare to be swept away by natural beauty and epic wildlife sightings during a trip of a lifetime!

WHAT TO EXPECT

South Luangwa

South Luangwa National Park is one of the few remaining wild places on our planet. It is an incredible location to experience an African safari because of its high concentrations of birds and mammals and low number of tourists. Endangered species such as the African painted dog and endemic species such as the Thornicroft’s giraffe, amongst other iconic African wildlife, will be some of your greatest highlights. The mighty Luangwa River brings this valley to life and provides the perfect habitat for more than 400 species of birds and over 60 species of favorite African mammals. All Dazzle Africa safaris support the conservation and protection of this magnificent ecosystem.

Emerald Itinerary
Day 1
Upon arrival in the capital city of Lusaka, your Zambian adventure will begin! You’ll be greeted at the airport and driven to Latitude 15, a boutique hotel that blends modern Africa with a cosmopolitan twist. Enjoy your artfully decorated ensuite room, delicious restaurant, state of the art gym, stylish lounge and a poolside terrace.
Days 5-7

Continuing on our adventure, we’ll transfer by boat to Nsefu Camp, in the remote and wild Nsefu sector of the National Park. You’ll stay 3 nights at Zambia’s first-ever safari camp steeped in romantic nostalgia and history.

The rondavel-style chalets are set directly on the Luangwa River in a remote area few get to visit, famous for its teeming wildlife and classic, elegant style. The Luangwa river spreads far beyond its banks here, lending an other-worldy feeling to this incredible place, and all excursions are by boat or on walking safaris.

Imagine yourself sipping sundowners while floating through the flooded ebony forest as the fiery sun plays upon the sky while elephants, hippos and lions keep you company. The truly gorgeous yellow-billed storks, dressed in their pink breeding plumage, have a famous colony in the trees here, and are a highlight on your boat excursions. Nsefu Camp is the ONLY camp open in this area during the Emerald Season. Lucky us!

Day 8-10

This morning you will transfer to Robin Pope’s Nkwali Camp! Spectacularly set on the banks of the Luangwa River, intimate and authentic, Nkwali Camp offers understated elegance, seclusion and superb service in the heart of the Luangwa Valley. The six spacious chalets offer wonderful river views and include ensuite bathrooms with double sinks and hot showers to ensure comfort in the wild.

Activities from Nkwali Camp include day and evening game drives or walking safaris that begin with a short boat ride across the Luangwa River into the park.   There’s even a lovely lagoon-side pool to kick back and relax in~ because there are no fences, the wildlife show will go on even while in camp!  Nkwali Camp is also a great base from which to explore the town of Mfuwe and pick up a few treasures along the way.

Day 11
Enjoy your final breakfast in the bush (until your next Dazzle Africa safari), then  say goodbye to camp staff, giraffes, elephants, hippos, lions, warthog and all the rest of the cast of The Lion King as we begin our transfer to Mfuwe Airport and toward home.  You’ll depart with South Luangwa and Zambia forever in your hearts.
