South Luangwa

The South Luangwa National Park is often called the “last great African frontier” and boasts huge concentrations of wildlife. It is here that the walking safari was born and still continues today in an area of the park that is remote and wild, the terrain and habitats varied and the wildlife shy and unused to man. From elephants, to ants, to buffalo, a bird’s nest to tracking a lion, you will learn the many facets of the bush on this mobile adventure.

Footsteps Through the Wilderness Itinerary

7 Nights

Day 1
On arrival at Mfuwe International Airport a guide from Robin Pope Safaris will meet you. The drive to Nkwali Camp is 1 hour through the lively and colorful town of Mfuwe and into the bush where you may have your first sightings of giraffes and elephants. Nkwali Camp has a wide view of the Luangwa River overlooking the South Luangwa National Park, ideally situated for the start of your safari. The six chalets are set high up on the riverbank and have open air bathrooms. After settling in and depending on your arrival time, you will enjoy lunch or high tea followed by an evening game drive and your first bush sundowner. Back at camp savor a three course gourmet dinner and a blissful night’s sleep.

Day 2
After an early breakfast, you’ll be driven north some 90 kilometers along a bush road through remote parts of the park to the Mupamadzi River and your first mobile camp. You’ll arrive around mid-day to find lodgings that include a twin walk-in tent, a hot bucket shower under a tree, and a long drop toilet with a wooden throne – all the comforts of home! After a delicious lunch, enjoy a siesta and then afternoon tea before setting out on your first bush walk to explore the wilds near camp. Upon return, it’s sundowners and dinner under the stars!

Day 3
Up at sunrise for the morning walk ~your highly trained guide will interpret the bush, point out animal tracks, identify bird calls, discuss plant life, and provide information about the behavior of the wildlife encountered. The mobile camp will be packed up and moved, along with your luggage, to Camp 2 where lunch will be ready upon your arrival, late morning. Relax in the afternoon before tea, an evening walk, sundowners and an incredibly delicious bush dinner.

Day 4
Explore the surrounding pristine wilderness in the morning and evening…returning to the same camp. Your guide will provide insights into the delicate balance of the ecosystem and how wildlife interacts with the environment. Round out the day with lively conversations and a wonderful night’s sleep while listening to the sounds of the bush.

Day 5 – 6
The camp will be moved to camp 3 during the morning as you walk further down the Mupamadzi River, a major tributary of the Luangwa. Perhaps your walks from here will find you secretly watching an elephant family playfully enjoying a bath in the river or have you following lion tracks through the bush. Walking quietly through the wilderness with your guide and scout will allow you to observe animals in their natural habitat without disturbing them. Your guide will share his expertise of the incredible nature all around you, while both he and your scout keep you safe. Enjoy evening sundowners while talking about the exciting events of the day and lovely dinners under the starlit sky.

Day 7
After an early breakfast, a 4-5 hour road transfer will bring you to the Luangwa River crossing point opposite Nsefu Camp. Camp staff will boat transfer you across the river and then drive you 20-minutes to your new lodging, the storied Nsefu Camp. This remote and small camp lies within the National Park and enjoys a stunning location on a sweeping bend of the Luangwa River. Settle into your en-suite rondavel style chalet, enjoy a scrumptious lunch followed by a well-deserved siesta before the evening game drive. Time to rest those weary legs!!

Day 8
After an early morning bountiful Nsefu breakfast you’ll say goodbye to your walking friends and the wild creatures of the South Luangwa for the 2-3 hour drive to Mfuwe Airport. Climbing into the African skies will be bittersweet as you make your way toward home with Zambia forever in your heart.

“…no one can return unchanged, for tawny lions will forever prowl our memory and great herds throng our imagination.”
