At the end of the great rift valley in Zambia lies one of the finest wildlife sanctuaries in the world called The South Luangwa National Park. This premier wilderness area is an astonishing place where the meandering Luangwa River runs through woodlands and large plains that play host to huge concentrations of wildlife including elephant, buffalo, lion, giraffe, hippos and over 450 species of birds. Nicknamed the Valley of the Leopard, The South Luangwa is one of the top 5 places to see leopards in all of Africa. It is here that you will also find one of the last strongholds of the endangered and amazing African Painted Dog. A thrill for any novice or experienced African safari lover.

WHAT TO EXPECT
South Luangwa
South Luangwa National Park is one of the few remaining wild places on our planet. It is an incredible location to experience an African safari because of its high concentrations of birds and mammals and low number of tourists. Endangered species such as the African painted dog and endemic species such as the Thornicroft’s giraffe, amongst other iconic African wildlife, will be some of your greatest highlights. The mighty Luangwa River brings this valley to life and provides the perfect habitat for more than 400 species of birds and over 60 species of favorite African mammals. All Dazzle Africa safaris support the conservation and protection of this magnificent ecosystem.

Emerald Itinerary
Days 2-4: The next morning, feeling refreshed and ready, we’ll take a short flight to the village of Mfuwe, the gateway to the South Luangwa National Park. Your friendly guides will greet you upon landing for a road transfer to the first of three camps, the all-inclusive Robin Pope Safaris’ Nkwali Camp. Spectacularly set on the banks of the Luangwa River, intimate and authentic, Nkwali Camp offers understated elegance, seclusion and superb service in the heart of the Luangwa Valley. The six spacious chalets offer wonderful river views and include ensuite bathrooms with double sinks and hot showers to ensure comfort in the wild.
Start soaking in the sights and sounds of the South Luangwa Valley. This is where you will be exploring over the next 6 days! You choose how you explore. Twice daily game drives, walking safaris, and relaxation time at camp are all available for you to choose from.
Day 5-7: Continuing on our adventure, we’ll transfer by boat to Nsefu Camp, in the remote and wild Nsefu sector of the National Park. You’ll stay 3 nights at Zambia’s first-ever safari camp steeped in romantic nostalgia and history. The rondavel-style chalets are set directly on the Luangwa River in a remote area few get to visit, famous for its teeming wildlife and classic, elegant style. The Luangwa river spreads far beyond its banks here, lending an other-worldy feeling to this incredible place, and all excursions are by boat or walking. Imagine yourself sipping sundowners while floating through the flooded ebony forest as the fiery sun plays upon the sky while elephants, hippos and lions keep you company. The truly gorgeous yellow-billed storks, dressed in their pink breeding plumage, have a famous colony in the trees here, and are a highlight on your boat excursions. Nsefu Camp is the ONLY camp open in this area during the Emerald Season. Lucky us!
Day 8-10: This morning you will transfer to Luangwa Safari House. Luangwa Safari House is a jaw-dropping private house that sits gracefully on the edge of a lagoon system where a large deck reaches out into the water, and dozens of hippos frolic and laze about.
Luangwa House has been designed to stimulate the senses from the minute you arrive. A strong castle-like structure looms up in front of you as you enter through the enormous pivoting door. Light graces you as the entire front of the house is open to the wilderness. The four double rooms are each subtly but differently decorated to mimic the elements – water, earth, wind and fire encompass the feeling of bringing nature into the house.
Day 11: Enjoy your final breakfast in the bush (until your next safari)! You may have time for a game drive in the morning depending on your flight time home…You will be departing back to Mfuwe for local shopping excursions and then heading to the charming Mfuwe Airport for your next destination or back home!
